Course Descriptions:
Achieving Student Outcomes Through
Cooperative Learning:
This course will introduce
you to practical skills that will help our students increase their
achievements while working in groups. The goal is to help you become
proficient with the skills of group set-up, monitoring, and debriefing.
You will learn to prevent typical classroom problems that often occur
during group work and effectively take care of any other problems which
may occur. You will learn to manage collaboratively processes so that
students learn academics and interpersonal skills simultaneously.
Achieving Student Outcomes through Cooperative Learning teaches you to
do two types of cooperative learning. The first, Cooperative Starters,
involves students in activities that can be done quickly (in less than ten
minutes class time) and can be immediately infused into your current
teaching strategies. The second, the Cooperative Learning 3-D Model, is
appropriate for a class period of 40-60 minutes. Here you will teach
students to be interpersonally effective, learn to monitor group work, and
debrief lessons at their conclusion.
Brain-Based Ways We Think
and Learn (Patterns for I.D.E.A.S.):
This course is about how we
think and learn. Understanding how and why we think differently under
different circumstances is vital, as it can help us solve problems and
arrive at solutions. It’s important for educators to know this so that
they can be aware of a student’s thinking process at any give time. It’s
important for students to know this as well, since critical thinking and
problem solving are the hallmark expectations for the twenty-first
century.
