As well, teachers new to the PEI public school system who hold a probationary contract will be automatically enrolled in the single basic life insurance ($100,000 term life insurance and $100,000 accidental death and dismemberment), the single health/hospital insurance and salary continuation. The effective date of coverage for these insurances is October 1. Even though you are automatically enrolled, the coverage is optional. You may opt out of any of the options that you do not wish to keep. However, if you opt out of the salary continuation or the life insurance coverage, proof of insurability will be required if you wish to enroll at a later date. The basic life insurance and the health/hospital insurance are cost shared with the employer. The salary continuation is not cost shared.

Teachers who hold a fixed term contract for a minimum of four (4) months may apply for the life insurance, the accidental death and dismemberment insurance, the health plan and the dental plan. However, you are not automatically enrolled. You must apply to obtain the coverage.

You may also obtain additional term life insurance, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, dental insurance and family coverage instead of single coverage for the options in which you are automatically enrolled. However, enrollment is not automatic, you must apply for these coverages.

If you hold a probationary contract your employer should have forwarded your name to Johnson Inc., our plan administrator. Johnson Inc. will send a confirmation of coverage letter, enrollment/application forms and a member booklet directly to your home address.
