LITERACY FOR ALL
This course, consisting of thirty hours (ten three-hour
sessions), will focus on the development of reading and writing rather
than on literacy in its broadest definition. It is intended to help
teachers who are already in the field grow in their understanding of
reading and writing processes. The course will have a large practical
component where teachers will have the opportunity to try out a variety
of research-based instructional and assessment strategies in their own
classrooms. An emphasis will be placed on meeting varying needs within
the classroom. The course will also help teachers better articulate
theory and practice to parents and the general public. The course will
deal with such practical issues as: Understanding the Reading Process,
Reading Assessment, Connecting Evaluation and Instruction, Reading
Comprehension, Guided Reading, Understanding the Writing Process,
Writing Assessment, and Instructional Strategies - Writing.
