Schulich Leader Scholarships
Program for Students |
Business leader and philanthropist,
Seymour Schulich, announces the new Schulich Leader Scholarships program
for students enrolling in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and
Mathematics) areas of study at a participating Canadian university in
fall, 2012. Those chosen as Schulich Leaders will ultimately help to
ensure that Canada is at the forefront of excellence in science and
research for generations to come.
The Schulich Leader Scholarships program asks every
high school, secondary school and CEGEP (in Quebec) across Canada to
select one student to represent their school as a Schulich Leader Nominee.
From this pool of nominees, 20 pre-selected universities across Canada
will each choose one outstanding student to be their Schulich Leader, each
of whom will receive a four-year scholarship valued at $60,000 to support
their studies at that university in a STEM faculty.
The granting of scholarships will start at the
beginning of the 2012 academic year at which time each selected university
will be entitled to grant one scholarship. The number of scholarships
awarded by each university will increase to two in 2013, and three in
2014. In 2015 and onwards, participating universities will be able to
select 3 Schulich Leaders for that year.
As the administrators of this exciting new program, UJA
Federation of Greater Toronto invites your school to participate and play
a role in the future development of our great nation. Your participation
in this vital initiative will not only benefit the country and those
participating students, it will set your school apart from the pack as an
educational facility that has educated and nurtured a future leader.
Go to
www.schulichleaders.com
to download the Nomination Guidelines to be used when selecting your
Schulich Leader Nominee, and a promotional poster to display at your
school. For the inaugural year of the program, you must submit the name of
your Schulich Leader Nominee no later than
Friday, January 13, 2012.

Financial Literacy Month: Play
a pivotal role in building students’ financial literacy! |
This November will mark the first edition of Financial
Literacy Month in Canada. This full month of activities and events will
highlight the need for increased financial literacy in Canada.
Unfortunately, too many young Canadians leave high school lacking
financial life skills and don’t know the harsh financial realities they’ll
face in the "real" world. The result: they often make costly mistakes that
can have a lasting impact on their personal finances. However, as a
teacher, you can help prepare your students for the financial challenges
they will encounter after high school. You can start empowering your
students today with the free teacher resource called The City: A
Financial Life Skills Resource. The City helps young Canadians improve
their knowledge of today’s complex financial world. It covers basic
concepts such as budgeting and savings, credit and debt, insurance,
financial planning and how to avoid fraud. The resource is ready to use,
with lesson plans; overheads; income, expense and budget handouts; and a
variety of worksheets. It can also be used as on online course. To make
finance more stimulating and engaging, The City draws students into
storylines, featuring eight characters that are at different stages in
their lives. These stories and characters show some of the financial
situations students will face in their own lives. Free teacher training is
available for teachers who want to learn more about The City and how to
use it in their classroom. The training is offered through Curriculum
Services Canada, and each participant receives a free copy of the teacher
manual when they sign up for a Web conference. During Financial Literacy
Month, initiate discussions with teenagers about personal money management
so that they can be better prepared and have the tools they need to
navigate through the financial realities of adulthood. For more
information about The City, a program developed by the Financial Consumer
Agency of Canada (FCAC) and the British Columbia Securities Commission (BCSC),
please visit fcac.gc.ca and go to the
" Educational Programs" section. For more information about Financial
Literacy Month, visit:

GREEN High Schools Program Set
to Launch Across Canada
Le Programme des écoles secondaires écologiques Lancement à travers le
Canada |
In partnership with the SEEDS Foundation, ECO Canada
has launched a new GREEN High Schools program--a national initiative that
encourages secondary students to create environmental projects while
exploring the wealth of environmental career opportunities available.
According to ECO Canada, a skilled labour shortage in
the environmental sector coupled with a growing demand for environmental
employees provides a vast array of career opportunities for the next
generation of graduates. A recent study produced by Harris/Decima, on
behalf of Canon Canada, also reports a growing 56% of secondary students
are more than ready to join the ranks of Canada’s environmental
professionals. However, 51% of those surveyed are unsure of the types of
environmental careers available. The GREEN High Schools program attempts
to fill this gap by connecting environmental education with career
exploration.
Students will be expected to research post-secondary
programs and related career opportunities as they engage in activities
that:
This year’s pilot program is limited to 50 schools.
Participating students, educators, and schools will receive national
recognition for their efforts, including a chance to receive a school
profile on the ECO Canada website, be featured in national and local media
press releases, and receive student certificates of recognition.
Interested teachers are encouraged to register early by sending an email
to Rebecca Dickson at

4th Annual WHERE Challenge
Starts Now!
|
Contest aims to attract budding
Earth scientists
(Toronto, Ontario) – After receiving rave reviews from
hundreds of participating Canadian teachers and students, the WHERE
Challenge is back for its fourth year! The national contest is endorsed by
the Canadian Earth sciences community and led by Mining Matters. The
Challenge is designed to ultimately attract young people to the field of
Earth sciences. As many of you know, both the Mining Industry Human
Resources Council and Petroleum Human Resources Council of Canada are
predicting a crippling shortage of talent in the coming years. It's
forecasted that tens of thousands of workers will be needed to fill jobs
in specialties including geology, engineering, environmental sciences,
technology and skilled trades over the next 10 years. Given this scenario,
WHERE Challenge organizers believe the Challenge is more important than
ever. The WHERE Challenge asks students aged 9 – 14 years to discover the
answers to these questions: What on Earth is in your stuff and WHERE on
Earth does it come from? The Challenge launches today and runs until March
1, 2012, with $10,000 in prize money up for grabs. Students are encouraged
to use their imagination and create an educational story about
non-renewable Earth resources found in an everyday item. Winners will be
announced May 8, 2012. Teachers whose classrooms have participated in past
WHERE Challenges say the contest offers students, teachers and even
parents something unique – an engaging project that's as entertaining as
it is educational. "I believe my students' ideas about the world we live
in changed as a result of participating in this contest," said Suzanne
Wernli-Roy, a B.C. elementary school teacher whose grade 5/6/7 class won
close to $1,000 in last year's WHERE Challengeby making a video following
a visit to an aluminum smelter in Kitimat. For more details, please visit

Notice re: First Pay in 2011 -
12 School Year |
Teachers should be aware that the first pay cheque for
the 2011-2012 school year will not be deposited in their account until
September 15, 2011.
Teachers like to think that they get paid bi-weekly.
However, the reality is that teachers receive a yearly salary. Section
10:01 (a) of the Memorandum of Agreement states, "each teacher shall
receive an annual salary in 26 payments; each of which shall be 1/26 of
his/her annual salary." Section 10:01 (b) further states, "notwithstanding
10:01 (a), a teacher shall receive his/her deferred salary payments for
the months of July and August on the last school day of the school year.
Such deferred salary payments shall be deposited no later than June 30."
Section 10:03 states "Each teacher employed on or before September 1 shall
receive his/her initial payment prior to September 16 in any school year."
You might ask the question, "what is the difference
between getting paid bi-weekly and receiving an annual salary in 26
payments, each of which shall be 1/26 of his/her annual salary?" The
answer to that question is that most years, there is no difference.
However, once every 11 years or so, if you get paid bi-weekly, there would
be 27 pay periods in the year which means that you would get an extra pay
cheque.
The year 2011-2012 is one of those years. If teachers
were paid bi-weekly and the first cheque was received September 1, 2011,
there would be 27 pay periods during the year which would result in an
over payment.
You must keep in mind that there is no loss of income
for anyone. On June 30, 2011 every teacher will receive all the money due
to them from the 2010-2011 school year. In the school year 2011-2012,
teachers will receive their yearly salary in 26 payments, the same as any
other year, however, the first payment will not be received until
September 15.
You must also remember that the payroll system for
teachers in PEI is unique. Teachers are the only employees where a
deferred salary method of payment is used. It means that some years,
teachers get a full pay after having worked only a few days; other years
more days are worked before being paid. In all cases all money earned
during any particular year is paid in full by June 30.

Education Governance
Commission Announced
Education and Early Childhood Development
Dr. Bill Whelan and Carrie St. Jean to Serve as Co-Chairs |
The membership of the Education
Governance Commission has been finalized, says Education and Early
Childhood Development Minister Doug Currie. "The members of this
independent Commission are being asked to consult widely with all
stakeholders," Mr. Currie said. "I believe their work will contribute to a
better process of school board governance." The Commission will begin work
this summer. It is expected to report to government in early 2012.
Additionally, the Commission has been asked to examine ways to improve
voter turnout during school board elections. "For various reasons, voter
engagement in school board elections has been very low for a long time,"
Mr. Currie said. "Given the strong tradition of voter turnout on the
Island, I believe there is a real opportunity to enhance engagement
through the election process." The five commissioners are: Commission
Co-Chairs, Dr. Bill Whelan and Carrie St. Jean; and Commission members
Carolyn Francis, Antoinette Perry and Lynn Ellsworth. (Biographies
included.) Among the questions the Commission will consider:
-
What are the appropriate roles of a school board
versus the role of the Department of Education and Early Childhood
Development?
-
How can the current legislative, regulatory and
policy frameworks under which the Boards operate be improved from an
accountability perspective?
-
How can the role of key stakeholders be enhanced,
such as home and school associations, parents, educators, and others in
the governance of our education system and keep them engaged?
"The last several years have seen a great deal of
change in the education system," Mr. Currie said. "For example, the
inclusion of kindergarten as a full-day program in the public system has
been both challenging and rewarding. The governance review will help the
system to better adapt to positive change."
BACKGROUNDER Commission Biographies:

Discover Canada in the Capital
À ladécouverte du Canada dans la capitale |
This article prepared by the National Capital
Commission might interest teachers who are thinking about organizing a
school trip to Ottawa.
Ask your students what comes to mind when they think of
Canada’s Capital, and they will probably mention Parliament, government
and politics. If you were to ask them how Canada’s Capital represents the
country and Canadians, students might be challenged to consider their own
connection to the Capital. The Capital is the political centre of our
country — and it is much more. Canada’s Capital tells our nation’s story.
It showcases our country’s past and present, and invites Canadians and the
world to learn about the people, places and events that continue to shape
this country. It is where our history is remembered, our national
achievements honoured and our symbolic artifacts treasured. Parliament
Hill is not just a meeting place for our elected representatives. It is
also a place where Canadians gather to celebrate and to make their voices
heard. The stories that these voices tell are shared and commemorated at
national museums and cultural institutions which highlight our collective
symbols, values and achievements. Today, in the Capital, students will
find the collective wealth of their country’s story. Challenge them to
find an example of an important Canadian person, event or object, and let
them discover where and how Canada’s Capital reflects the country.
Features of the Capital
Witness history in the making, during an appeal hearing
at our country’s highest court, the Supreme Court of Canada. See Lester B.
Pearson’s Nobel Peace Prize, on display at Foreign Affairs and
International Trade Canada headquarters. Marvel at a full-size replica of
the Canadarm, on display at the Canada Science and Technology Museum.
Discover common and rare breeds of animals found on farms across Canada.
All are housed at the Canada Agriculture Museum and Central Experimental
Farm. Walk down the blast tunnel, and stand in the War Cabinet Room at the
Diefenbunker, Canada’s Cold War Museum and national historic site. Listen
to creation recordings narrated by Elders in the First Peoples Hall at the
Canadian Museum of Civilization. On a field trip or in the classroom, your
students will be motivated to find their story and gain a better sense of
the dynamic character of Canada through the Capital’s national
attractions, collections and sites. For more information about unique
Capital opportunities that feature Canadian governance (justice, democracy
and security); Canada’s heritage (museums in the Capital); and the outdoor
classroom (history, nature and physical activity), visit
