A Summer Course for Elementary and Secondary Teachers 8:30 am to 4:30 pm daily, July 5th - July 9th 2010.

WHY: Economic, social, environmental and technological transformations have greatly changed the global context, which requires students to become citizens who can engage in the increasingly interconnected world effectively, responsibly, and ethically. Through an enhanced awareness of social and pedagogical inclusive learning environment as well as equitable treatment for all students, participants of this course will broaden their cultural and pedagogical perspectives. This, in turn, will prepare them to help students intellectually and morally examine the crucial issues in the world while developing an appreciation for human diversity and social justice. Lesson plans and background materials will be demonstrated and distributed. All teachers attending will receive a copy of the facilitator’s guide: Educating for Global Citizenship. UNDERSTANDING MEDIA LITERACY: INSIDE PLATO’S CAVE
A 3-CREDIT ONLINE COURSE

This new media education course was written and field tested by Canadian media educators. The course is designed especially for grades 7-12 teachers who want to help their students develop an informed and critical understanding of the nature, impact and techniques of the mass media. The course and the interactive discussion forums that accompany the units will help teachers understand media theory then transform theory into practice as they develop lessons for their own students and teaching situations.

This course recognizes that although mass media have come to dominate many aspects of our society, children have few opportunities to develop media literacy skills in formal settings. A basic assumption of the course is that media literacy helps children develop an informed understanding of the nature of the mass media, its techniques, and effects. More specifically, it is education that aims to increase under-standing and enjoyment of how the media work, how they produce meaning, how they are organized and how they construct reality. The course aims to provide the means by which teachers and others can foster media literacy in children so that they can critically analyze and evaluate the form and content of media, create media, communicate using media, and understand their use and purpose. The course is offered by Athabasca University, a recognized Canadian public university with 30,000 online students. Teachers can take this 13 unit course as a six week summer session or study at their own pace during the year. The course is offered as EDUC 115 and CMNS 315. Course fees are average for online courses. Individualized study (work at your own pace) is available throughout the year. Registration opens 10 August 2010. The 2010 summer session runs July 5-August 15 (registration June 1-10 ) For more information, the course website at Athabasca University is found at www.athabascau.ca/platoscave/

VETERANS AFFAIRS CANADA LEARNING RESOURCES

Veterans Affairs Canada offers educators a wide selection of free, bilingual resources about Remembrance and Canada’s military history, from the South African War to today. Our resources are available in multiple formats. If high-quality printed copies are what you need, you can request many of our materials using our easy-to-use on-line ordering system (there are absolutely no shipping charges). And if you are looking for instant access to our materials in your library, our Veterans Affairs Canada Web site is the place to go. Let’s explore some of the resources that you might find useful to engage students. These can also be shared with other teachers in your school.

Veterans Affairs Canada Historical Resources

‘Remembrance’ is an important part of being a well-informed Canadian. How can we truly understand the country we have today without a knowledge of the sacrifices and achievements that have been made by our Veterans and current Canadian Forces members to protect the peace and freedom we enjoy?

That is where our wide selection of historical resources can come in. For a country that has an international reputation for peace, Canada has taken part in many wars and conflicts. Knowing what Canada did - and why - is important. Veterans Affairs Canada has a wide selection of historical publications like public information sheets and historical booklets, covering many chapters of our military heritage from the First World War to modern-day Canadian Forces efforts. Our concise public information sheets are ideal for providing an overview of a subject, helpful to teachers looking to give their students some historical background in an easy-to-digest manner. Our longer historical booklets (some of which are more than 50 pages in length) offer more in-depth information on a subject, making them very useful for research projects or other situations where a more detailed historical account is required. Check out the ‘History’ portion of our Web site to explore some of our resources. Most of our materials are available in HTML and downloadable PDF formats, and we offer our streaming video resources in Flash, Window Media and QuickTime formats. You can also order high-quality printed versions of many of our materials using our on-line ordering system.

Veterans Affairs Canada Learning Materials

Veterans Affairs Canada also produces high-quality resources created specifically for educators. Our comprehensive multimedia learning kits offer videos/DVDs, in-depth historical information, lesson plans and a variety of other resources like posters, music CDs, postcards and information sheets to give educators the tools with which to engage their students. We currently offer kits about the First World War, the Second World War and the Korean War. We also offer on-line learning modules for you and your school focusing on specific military events, such as D-Day and the Battle of Normandy, the Italian Campaign, the Battle of the Atlantic, and the Liberation of Belgium and the Battle of the Scheldt. And that is not all. ‘Heroes and Poppies - an Introduction to Remembrance’, the ‘60th Anniversary of the End of the Second World War Teacher’s Guide’ and the ‘50 Way to Remember’ information sheet offer a wealth of activities that educators can use as starting points to incorporate Remembrance into their teaching, while the ‘Candlelight Tribute Ceremony’ information sheet has instructions for organizing a ‘candlelight tribute’ that a school could conduct to show that we remember Canadians who have given their lives in service.

Other Veterans Affairs Canada On-line Resources

2010 is a milestone year for many significant events from Canada’s military history. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Canadian Navy, the 95th anniversary of the Newfoundland Regiment’s fighting at Gallipoli during the First World War, and the 65th anniversaries of the liberation of the Netherlands, the Murmansk Run, the liberation of Hong Kong prisoners of war and the end of the Second World War. Veterans Affairs Canada will be offering a variety of historical and educational resources with information on these events. 2010 also saw Canada play host to the world at the Vancouver Winter Olympics. You can explore our Olympics Web feature to learn about Canadians who both served Canada in a military uniform and competed for our country at the Olympics over the years. We offer a number of other interesting Web features, exploring subjects like the 90th anniversary of the end of the First World War, the 55th anniversary of the Korean War armistice, and the Canadian Forces - in the service of peace. We have many other on-line resources, as well. For example, ‘Experience Vimy’ allows users to visit the Canadian National Vimy Memorial in France without leaving their chairs. Students can use their computer mouse to swoop up and down and zoom in and out to view the memorial from many different angles. You can also read the names of the 11,285 Canadians who died in France during the First World War and who have no known grave which are inscribed on the base of the monument. ‘Heroes Remember’ is a database of videotaped interviews with Canadian Veterans, containing approximately 2,400 English clips and more than 560 French clips. With this tool, students can search for first-hand accounts from men and women who served in the navy, army, air force, Merchant Navy, or on the home front; stories related to significant chapters in our country’s military heritage; and even find interviews with Veterans from their own communities, regions or provinces. There are a variety of interesting components associated with this resource, such as a section focusing on the contributions of Chinese-Canadians during the Second World War. Through video clips and archival footage, the La force francophone Web feature provides first person accounts from French speaking Canadian men and women from all walks of life who served both at home and overseas during the Second World War. This feature honours these Francophones from across Canada by giving them the opportunity to tell their stories on a number of different themes. In the First World War Audio Archive Web component you can learn about Canada’s participation in the First World War by listening to audio recollections of Veterans, as they recall their life and times during the war years. As well, you can view a selection of Canadian artist William Redver Stark’s collection of First World War sketches, showcased in six thematic galleries. A visit to the medals section provides information on service medals awarded during the First World War. Finally, in the learning corner one can explore a variety of multimedia presentations. Veterans Affairs Canada’s array of educational and informational resources can help you meet your provincial curriculum goals while fostering students’ understanding of the sacrifices and achievements of those who have served in the cause of peace and freedom. Visit the ‘Youth & Educators’ section of the Veterans Affairs Canada Web site today and see what you may have been missing.

PEI Citizen Advocacy

PEI CITIZEN ADVOCACY - Would you like to volunteer as a friend for an adult with an intellectual disability? It is well known that graduating from high school can be the beginning of a life of isolation for Islanders with intellectual disabilities. Many lead lonely lives, without the very ordinary friendships which most of us rely on. PEI Citizen Advocacy is a non-profit organization which matches volunteers (advocates) with adults who have an intellectual disability (partners) on a one-on-one basis. The advocate becomes not only a friend but also a supporter who can stick up for their partner. Through their friendship the partner feels a greater sense of belonging to the community-at-large.

You may catch a movie together, have a coffee, visit a friend or go for a swim. It may be a couple of hours a month or a couple of hours a week. Volunteer advocates make a huge impact on the lives of those they are matched with. A partner recently said: "My advocate is a great friend. She gets me out in the community and helps me with any problems. Our friendship makes me feel happy". PEI Citizen Advocacy is presently looking for people interested in becoming advocates for six people from across PEI. If you are interested or would like to find out more about us we may be reached at our office at 566-3523 or at peica@eastlink.ca.

Edu-kits on Acadian history available free of charge at the Musée Acadienne in Miscouche

Find easy to use edu-kits on Acadian history available free of charge at the Musée Acadienne in Miscouche (902) 432-2880. The kits are bilingual and contain all equipment necessary for the smooth delivery of the activities including a well detailed lesson plans.

(Activity descriptions in French follows)

Grades 2 to 6 - "Building an Aboiteau and a Dyke"
This activity lasts 45 to 60 minutes. Students will learn how Acadians used the reclaimed marshlands around the Baie Française (Bay of Fundy) and le Bassin des Mines (Minas Basin), by building "aboiteaux" (Acadian sluices) and dykes to drain the land and to stop the sea from coming back on the land at high tide. Students will work in teams to discover how to build a dyke.

Grades 4 to 9 - "The Mysterious Mixed up Artifacts"
This activity lasts 45 to 60 minutes. Imagine life in 17th and 18th Century Acadia through its artifacts. Objects made by humans represent a complete gamut of activities; among them, the most fundamental are linked to our essential needs: eating, drinking and protecting ourselves from the elements. Even without written documentation, objects can speak eloquently about their users. Students will help uncover the past using systematic approach of the archaeologist: practicing focused observation, classification, comparison, in a team-work context. The degree of complexity for this activity varies according to the grade level.

Grades 6 to 10 - "Deportation: 1755"
Indoor activity that lasts 60 to 75 minutes. Role play the events of the Deportation from Grand-Pré. Students will begin the activity by viewing a short film. We ask that they pay close attention to the words, the sounds, the instruments, the mannerisms and the movements that they find important. This is followed by a role-play of the deportation with each student taking on the role of an Acadian individual who was deported. The goal of this activity is to provide students with a more personal comprehension of the events of the 1755 Deportation.

Grades 7 to 12 - "Evangeline"
This activity lasts 90 minutes. Evangeline, A Tale of Acadie was published by the American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow in 1847. The poem became universally popular and was translated into French in the 1860s. The Acadians adopted Evangeline as a heroine. This role play will provide students with the opportunity to act out the story for themselves.

En 1847, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow a publié Evangeline, A Tale of Acadie. Ce poème est devenu populaire à travers le monde. Il a été traduit en français en 1865. Les Acadiens ont adopté Évangéline comme héroïne. Les étudiants feront un jeu de rôle pour mettre en scène l’histoire d’Évangéline.

A Mental Health Service for Infants, Children, Youth, and their Families

This web-based resource assists teachers in dealing with behaviours of children ages 3 to 14 in their classrooms. Focused on those behaviours teachers observe that they find troubling or worrisome, it helps them understand the behaviours, why they may occur, how to know whether they may indicate a mental health problem, and how to address them. It also provides strategies for promoting good mental health in the classroom. The resource can be found at www.hincksdellcrest.org/abc . An enhancement to adapt the ABCs of Mental Health to the high school level is now under development. The first step will be to ask secondary school teachers and support staff about their students’ behaviours that are most troubling to them. Informed by the teachers’ responses, we will identify topic areas to be developed by mental health experts. The resulting resource will address high school teachers’ expressed concerns and help them understand adolescents’ behaviours and mental health difficulties. We are inviting secondary school educators and support workers across Canada to tell us about the behaviours they find troubling. They can do this through an on-line questionnaire, available at: http://surveymonkey.com/s/mentalhealthresourceteachers

World AIDS Day 2008: Participate in the "One Hour on AIDS" initiative!

For World AIDS Day on 1 December 2008, Education International invites its member organisations to participate in the "One Hour on AIDS" initiative. Building on the success of last year, EI hopes that the lesson proposed in the "One Hour on AIDS" activity kit can be taught in thousands of schools and union offices around the world. The idea is simple, the message is clear: teachers have a central role in raising awareness about HIV and AIDS. World AIDS Day is an ideal opportunity to get involved. Start by taking one hour to talk about HIV and AIDS on 1 December! Despite recent progress in combating the spread of the virus, HIV and AIDS remains a significant threat to public health in many countries, affecting teachers and students worldwide. EI urges teacher unions in all countries to join this initiative and highlight the importance of education in HIV prevention. In 2001, governments pledged at the UN General Assembly that over 90% of young men and women would have the knowledge needed to reduce their vulnerability to HIV infection by 2010. However, the results of national surveys in 2007 show worryingly low numbers – around 40% – of young women and men have accurate knowledge regarding HIV and AIDS. Education for prevention is a must, not only in countries with high HIV prevalence, but equally in countries with low prevalence where the trivialization of the virus is leading to a rise in irresponsible sexual behaviour among young people, resulting in a greater risk of HIV infection. As part of this initiative, your union will receive the "One Hour on AIDS" activity kit, which contains the "One Hour on AIDS" lesson plan and the "Take the lead on AIDS" poster. The poster can be used to accompany the lesson and displayed in union offices or classrooms as an ongoing reference point for HIV and AIDS education throughout the year. All material can be downloaded at: www.ei-ie.org/efaids

MEANING OF HOME WRITING CONTEST IN SUPPORT OF HABITAT FOR HUMANITY

From October 6 to November 14. 2008, students in grades 4, 5 and 6 can enter the Meaning of Home writing contest in support of Habitat for Humanity. We wanted to make teachers aware of this initiative as they begin the school year. By entering, students have the chance to make a difference in their community – the winner will be part of the ultimate gift: A $60,000 contribution towards the building of a Habitat home in or near the winner’s community. The best part is: Teachers can incorporate the writing contest into their classroom activities and assignments. As you know, one of the key elements of language learning is to interact and connect with individuals. Here’s how the writing contest helps teachers meet some core requirements: The writing contest provides students with the opportunity to produce an original piece of work that reflects their capacity for independent critical thought. The contest is an activity that students will see as meaningful; one that challenges them to think creatively about a topic that directly impacts their lives – the meaning of home – and will ultimately improve their writing skills. You can download a complete, ready-to-go Education Module – including a lesson plan, activity ideas, writing tips and a Habitat for Humanity fact sheet – and full contest details at www.meaningofhome.ca (French: www.sensdunchezsoi.ca)

    THE DANCE OF BULLYING

With thousands of children avoiding school each day for fear of being persecuted by their peers; and countless more dreading it for the same reason, we are proud to present our award winning timely, insightful, and truly practical handbook which shows parents, teachers, school administrators, and community leaders how to create healthier, safer schools and communities. Based on the psychology and physics behind bullying, The Dance of Bullying - A Breakthrough Tools for Teachers and Parents explains the interpersonal dynamics that cause one child to harass another. This guide contains tools and techniques which will enhance a child’s feelings of self-appreciation and gratitude. It contains an array of skill-building tips for both educators and family members; invaluable new insights into the thinking of both the bully and the bullied; and specific actions to help adults intervene decisively. By understanding the bullying dynamic, you will be able to intervene with far greater impact and in a way that honors everyone involved. With your help, all children can emerge from these relationships with greater self-esteem and skill and you will be able to instigate significant changes in your school and community.  Dr. Donald Glendenning, Founding President of Holland College and world renowned CBE educator says: "Here is a practical book aimed at teachers, parents and front line administrators. The Dance of Bullying provides learning opportunities that should not be ignored.
