2007--Representatives of the province’s 1,500 teachers will address educational
issues at the Annual General Meeting of the Prince Edward Island Teachers’
Federation, May 25 and 26, 2007 at the Delta Prince Edward Hotel in
Charlottetown.
Federation President, Seana Evans-Renaud,
indicates that the Board of Governors, the policy-making body of the Federation,
will be discussing and debating a variety of internal and external matters.
Various existing policies will be reaffirmed or rescinded. Action resolutions
will be reviewed and will determine the priorities of the Federation for the
upcoming year.
Delegates will also consider resolutions
related to research on the effects of classroom composition on student learning
and the duration of a leave of absence for those teachers elected to the House
of Commons or appointed to the Provincial Cabinet.
Federation President, Seana Evans-Renaud, will
address the delegates on Friday evening. President Evans-Renaud is completing
her two year term as the spokesperson for teachers on Prince Edward Island.
President Evans-Renaud will highlight her work with the Teachers’ Federation as
she has been called upon to comment on a wide array of educational issues.
General Secretary, Shaun MacCormac will also
provide his first report to the Annual General Meeting as General Secretary
reporting on Federation activities in the past four months.
President-Elect, Phyllis Horne will be
re-affirmed as President of the Federation effective July 1, 2007 to June 30,
2009. In the past year, Ms. Horne has served as President-Elect and has been
very actively involved in the activities of the Federation.
Phyllis Horne is currently the Principal of
Alberton School. During her 35 year teaching career, she has taught in four
schools from grades 1 - 9. Ms. Horne is particularly interested in educational
issues related to special education and inclusionary practices. Her Masters
degree thesis researched Teachers’ Perspectives on Inclusion. Ms.
Horne has a long record of service and involvement in the activities of the
Prince Edward Island Teachers’ Federation. She has served on the Federation
Executive for five years in various capacities and has also served as Area
Coordinator in the Western Area Teachers’ Association. Additionally, she has
served on numerous Federation Committees. Ms. Horne has indicated that issues of
teacher workload and classroom composition will be at the top of her priority
list as she assumes the President’s role this summer.
At this time, Gilles Arsenault, a teacher at
Evangeline School and Carrie St. Jean, a teacher at Glen Stewart Elementary
School have indicated their intentions to run for the positions of
Vice-Presidents. Both are currently members of the Federation Executive. They
will address delegates on Saturday morning. Elections for the five
Member-at-Large positions of the Federation Executive were held in early May at
the meetings of the local Area Associations.
Board members will be joined at the
President’s Dinner on May 26 by a number of former Federation Presidents and
other invited guests.
The meeting concludes Saturday afternoon.

Charlottetown, PE, May 17, 2007 – On Wednesday,
May 16, the teachers of Prince Edward Island voted to ratify the tentative
agreement for a new Memorandum of Agreement between the Education Negotiating
Agency and the Prince Edward Island Teachers’ Federation.
After informing the membership, Seana Evans-Renaud,
President of the PEITF, announced the results of the vote to media outlets at
1:00 p.m. today. "I am very pleased to say that a high percentage of teachers
voted to accept the terms and conditions of a new Collective Agreement," states
Ms. Evans-Renaud. "It is reassuring to know that the collective bargaining
process once again served as an effective means of reaching an agreement for a
second consecutive time."
"I am also very pleased that this was
accomplished while maintaining the positive relationship that exists between the
educational partners and the teachers of the province."
Highlights of the agreement include:
- Three year agreement: July 1, 2007 to June 30,
2010;
- Salary increases of 2.5%, 3% and 3% per year
plus grid adjustments to address the issues of recruitment and retention of
teachers on PEI; and,
- $200,000 per year to address issues of class
composition.

Charlottetown, PE, February 19, 2007 - Shaun MacCormac has
commenced work in the position of General Secretary of the Prince Edward Island
Teachers’ Federation replacing Myles Ellis, who has left to start a new position
as Director of Economic and Member Services with the Canadian Teachers’
Federation in Ottawa. Mr. MacCormac was officially appointed by the Federation’s
Board of Governors in late January and began his work on February 5, 2007.
"I am honoured to be chosen to represent the teachers in this
province. They are hard working professionals who do their best every day for
Island students", MacCormac states.
Before assuming his official duties, Mr. MacCormac taught
Economics, Accounting and Mathematics courses - along with a variety of other
courses at Charlottetown Rural High School in Charlottetown for thirteen years.
He has also taught at Fort Augustus School and Souris Regional High School.
Mr. MacCormac has, since the beginning of his teaching
career, been active in the activities of the Prince Edward Island Teachers’
Federation. He has been an important member of the Economic Welfare Committee
for six years and was the Chairperson of the Group Insurance Trustees at the
time of his appointment as General Secretary. He has also served on the Finance
and Property Committee, the Pension Committee and other provincial level
committees. At the local level, Mr. MacCormac was involved as a member of the
Board of Governors representing his school and also served as Treasurer of the
Eastern Area Teachers’ Association for three years.
Mr. MacCormac holds a Business degree from Acadia University
and a Bachelor of Education degree from Dalhousie University. He has also taken
many continuing education courses in the fields of economics and business.
In his new position, Mr. MacCormac will direct and
co-ordinate the daily operations of the Federation and implement the decisions
of the Federation’s decision making bodies - the Board of Governors and the
Executive. He will guide the President on matters of policy and operations as
well as issues effecting individual teachers.
He will also, over time, lead the Federation’s activities
preparing for and negotiating a Memorandum of Agreement as the spokesperson for
the Federation’s 1,500 teachers at the bargaining table.
"The PEITF has had an excellent working relationship with all
stakeholders in the education system. As a member of the negotiating team during
the last round of bargaining, I was very pleased to see the government work with
us to achieve a negotiated settlement. I look forward to them doing the same in
the upcoming round and negotiations in the future", MacCormac states.
The Prince Edward Island Teachers’ Federation is a
professional association whose mission is to advance and promote the interests
of education, and to advance, promote and safeguard the interests of the
teaching profession and its members. It has 1,500 members teaching in public
schools from grades 1-12.
