"EARLY CHILDHOOD BILINGUALISM: PERILS AND POSSIBILITIES"

The Canadian Council on Learning is pleased to inform you that the fifth speaker of the Minerva Lecture Series will soon be visiting Charlottetown. On Monday, April 21st, Dr. Fred Genesee will be giving a free, public talk at the Institute for Nutrisciences and Health’s lecture theatre at UPEI at 3:00 PM. The title of his lecture is “Early childhood bilingualism: Perils and possibilities”. We believe this presentation will appeal to anyone interested in issues pertaining to bilingualism in education, second language learners, immersion, and the challenges associated with accommodating the varied needs of learners from varied cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Dr. Genesee is a world-renowned scholar of bilingualism, language development and language immersion programs, a Professor of Psychology at McGill University and the author of numerous scientific research books and reports on language learning in children. We would be grateful for your assistance in circulating this message to your members, colleagues, and staff who might benefit from attending this event. Teachers, in particular, might be able to count this event toward mandated professional development requirements. The Minerva Lecture Series was created by the Canadian Council on Learning to foster discussion between Canadian learning researchers and citizens from across the country. It is a unique opportunity to understand how research can inform and affect students’ learning and the everyday work of educators across the country. It also offers participants a chance to discover why learning and education are topics that matter to everyone. For additional information on Dr. Genesee’s talk or our series in general, please visit the Minerva Lecture Series page on the Canadian Council on Learning’s website at http://www.ccl-cca.ca/minervaseries

Please note: Perimeter Institute will cover all expenses within Canada, including transportation, accommodations, meals, and activities.

Perimeter Explorations: Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics (PI) has created a new turnkey classroom resource designed to help science teachers introduce and guide students through a variety of topics in physics. The lessons, known as Perimeter Explorations, are viewable online and are the product of collaborations between Perimeter Institute’s international researchers, outreach staff, and experienced educators. The first installment, The Mystery of Dark Matter, has been designed with both the expert and novice teacher in mind. The full kit is free to educators while quantities last and includes a 25 minute DVD, Teacher Notes and Student Worksheets. This new resource fulfills the number one request from the hundreds of educators who attend the Institute’s popular ‘EinsteinPlus Workshops on Modern Physics’ – to receive PI’s lessons in a turn-key format that teachers can use in-class. YOUR ENERGY - A RENEWABLE RESOURCE

Atlantic Canada Society for Bioenergetic Analysis presents: Your Energy A Renewable Resource at Work and Home with Louise Fréchette, Psychologist - Friday, April 25, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. - Mount St. Mary’s, 141 Mount Edward Road, Charlottetown, PEI. Workshop Highlights: While the number of hours in our day is fixed, your capacity to renew energy is not. High levels of energy enhance our ability to concentrate, meet deadlines, make decisions, create work/life balance and enjoy the things in life tht matter most to us. When our energy wanes, joy and satisfaction in life are hard to maintain. What are the keys to boosting energy and allowing it to flow freely? This workshop will offer a bioenergetic (body/mind) approach to energy, and present ways to increase the quality and quantity of your energy. The results will allow you to access more and more of your energy potential and to cope more efficiently with stress and challenges not only at work but also at home.

About the presenter:  Louise Fréchette is an International Trainer with the International Institute for Bioenergetic Analysis. She is a psychologist, therapist and writer, and has presented workshops and training around the world.
